Our History

Though Nippondenso Manufacturing U.S.A., Inc. was officially established in 1984, temporary associates began working on light assembly lines in the “incubator” of the Battle Creek Unlimited warehouse in 1983.

Sixty temporaries assembled car heaters for Honda under the direction of a few managers, with no guarantee they would ever become part of the final DMMI team. In the style that would come to represent DMMI’s loyalty to its associates, every one of the temporaries became associates when DMMI’s plant was completed in 1986.

DMMI celebrates its grand opening ceremony in 1986.

We opened our doors in July 1986 to become the first Nippondenso manufacturing plant in North America. Our first shipment of product went to California in the summer of 1986.

The company's growth rapidly escalated, and shortly after opening, a major expansion was announced that effectively doubled the size of the facility. In 1988, the expansion was completed, welcoming in several decades of continuous growth and expansion of the plant in Battle Creek. Our automotive heating and cooling products are among the best in the world, and are sold to nearly every automobile manufacturer in North America.

As customers recognized the quality of our products, we began receiving recognition from our customers. In 1990, the company received quality awards from Honda, Ford, and Mazda. That tradition of quality continues today as the company perennially receives quality awards from top customers.

Not long after opening, the company was awarded Industry Week Magazine's prestigious "America's Best" award for being one of the top 10 manufacturing plants in the nation. Additionally, the company has received numerous environmental and community awards for its continuing emphasis on protecting and supporting the local community .

In 1996, the company changed its name to DENSO Manufacturing Michigan, Inc. to reflect our continued diversification and emphasis on international business.

Over the past decade, as the automotive business evolved into an extremely competitive global market, DMMI responded with efficiency and quality improvements that will keep the company competitive for many years into the future. We remain poised to meet challenges by going beyond all expectations.

DMMI puts safety and quality first, and we're proud of our record of achievements. When we're recognized by our customers, the community and governmental agencies for our commitment to these principals, it reminds us that the work we do here - and the care that we take - can have a far-reaching and positive impact on the world around us.
